"Okay... now what?"

It’s the easiest thing in the world to take the StrengthsFinder 2.0 test and discover your strengths. Buy the book online or at your local bookstore and take the test. In about an hour you’ll be done. You’ll read through your test results and bask in it’s accuracy and learn a few things about yourself that you didn’t know. It really is amazing!

 “Okay... now what?”

It’s the number one question people ask me and it’s a great question! If you’re like most people, you’ll learn something about yourself and then have no idea what to do next.

It’s important to learn about yourself. Information about "you" is like seeds that you can plant and grow into a lot more of YOU. How cool is that? With care and intention, this information can CHANGE your life. But you can’t make change without first understanding what you’d like to change about your life.

So, now what? Take your seeds and do the following:

1. Get clear.

What do you want to grow? Everybody has something in their life that needs attention but what you really have to ask yourself is “what is worth my attention?”  Maybe it’s your relationships, your weight, your job. Don’t try to do it all. Just pick the one thing that is worth the most to you.

What needs work that is worthwhile to you?

2. Get real.

Here’s the fertilizer that will ensure healthy growth. What do you want the RESULT of your change to be and can you do it? You can’t make any change in your life unless you are absolutely sure you can actually do it. Get real about what needs to happen. It will probably make you mad but as Gloria Steinem said “The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.”

Get mad. Get real. Can you do it?

3. Get going.

The last step is where the magic happens but you can’t even think about doing this step without being 100% committed to steps one and two. Ask yourself:

  • Is it worthwhile to me?

  • Do I actually believe that I can do the work that is necessary?

You’re not going to make any change in your life unless you answer “YES” to both of those questions. But if you did answer "yes", here’s where things get easy. Because now, all you have to do is go back to your test results and... (are you ready for it?) ... be more of yourself. Yes, YOU are right there in black and white in your test results. It’s who you already are so be more of YOU. That’s it!

If you’re really ready for a change in your life, you’ll make the change. This exercise is really designed to make you aware of what you need to use your strengths on. You can use your strengths in everything you do. However, too often we go through life like zombies not thinking about what we truly need to work on.

As adults, we are responsible to recognize and contribute to our own self development. We can depend on our strengths to do that. Who’s fault is it if we don’t?
